How did know you wanted to be a sister?

I gradually came to realize that I wanted to give my life to the service of others.  Once I came to this realization I looked for ways to do it.  When I saw the Daughters of Charity serve, they were happy to be doing it and they personally related to the people they served.  They also cared about one another.  I realized this was a group I could join and I would find others doing the same. – Sr. Mary Frances Barnes

Great question!  I was 25 years old, working, in a serious relationship when I met the Daughters of Charity where I worked.  Over time, I became more and more attracted to these wonderful, holy women, yet really wanted to be married and have a family of my own.  Paying attention to God’s stirrings within me and believing somehow that God was calling me to be a Daughter, I made some very difficult decisions and decided to give it a try, all the while thinking I might be making a big mistake.  Here I am, nearly forty years later, and I wouldn’t change a minute of what has evolved from that decision.  Who would have ever thought it?  Surely not I! - Sister Maura Hobart
I attended a School of Nursing  staffed by the Daughters of Charity and was very attracted by their evident commitment to serve those most in need.  Through personal prayer and discernment, I came to believe that God was calling me to commit my life to service in the Church as a Daughter of Charity. - Sister Marilyn Perkins

I was attracted by the services the sisters rendered to the poor in and around New York City, where they lived in my parish in Queens. When I expressed interest in the community I was invited to a six week live-in experience with the sisters. We shared community life, prayer love for the poor, and for each other. The sisters shared daily activities with me which increased my understanding and desire to share their life. Each monthly visit strengthened my desire to serve those who are poor and to live in community. After discussing this attraction to the simplicity of the Daughters of Charity's lifestyle over a period of time with my spiritual director,  I applied to the community. I am 13 years vocation and grateful for the privilege of being a Daughter of Charity. – Sr. Nora Sweeney
