 Meet Sister Catherine Cotter
Catherine Cotter grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts and after graduation, went to work in an insurance company in Boston. One day she got a letter in the mail from Sister Oliva, (the legendary Daughter of Charity who never missed an opportunity to promote religious vocations), asking if she would like to come to a meeting of the Catherine Laboure Business Girls Guild at the Old Carney Hospital in South Boston. “I don’t know, to this day, how Sister Oliva got my name, but I responded, and actually began volunteering at Carney. One day she said to me, ‘have you ever thought about a vocation’? I said YES and the next thing I knew, I was in the community”!
After completing her Seminary (novitiate), Sister Catherine was sent to Sarah Fisher Home in Farmington, Michigan, a large institution for children. After five years there as a child care worker, she then completed her undergraduate studies and went on to New York City for graduate work, receiving her Master’s in psychiatric social work from Fordham University. Sister Catherine spent many years as Administrator of child-caring institutions, was the social worker in an outpatient pediatric clinic, and used her administrative skills at DePaul Provincial House, Albany.
Sister Catherine is now in Ogdensburg, New York, where she works for Catholic Charities. She ministers at Seaway House, a Catholic Charities program for chronically mentally ill people . She also does intake for the Offenders’ program and runs a parenting group as well. “I love the North Country and its people.” Her allegiance to the Boston Red Sox has made for some very stimulating debate there as well!
