Sister Kathleen Appler

Sister Kathleen grew up in Utica, NY, the second oldest child of ten children. As the oldest girl in her family she enjoyed many enriching childhood experiences which combined shared sibling fun among so many, and simple responsibilities for every-day household tasks.

Sister Kathleen’s grade school, high school and undergraduate level of college education all took place in Catholic Schools. Each of the schools she attended were administered by different and very distinct religious Communities and thus enabled her to experience first hand a variety of ways of following their respective founders. She received her Master's Degree through SUNY-Cortland in Elementary Education and Administration.

"I first met the Daughters of Charity in high school. I was impressed with the spirit of joy evident among themselves, and the care and respect they shared with us – their students. I found them to be 'real' women who seemed to balance well their enjoyment of life lived in community, their ministry responsibilities, and their simple, but personal relationships with God.

I was particularly touched by their ability to go out to others - connecting themselves to their parish churches, the streets of the cities, the homes of those who were poor . . . rather than staying withIN a particular convent, monastery, etc.. After some college and further work experience, I decided it was time to seriously respond to what I perceived to be our Lord’s call to me. With the guidance and encouragement of the Daughters of Charity, I continued my life journey by becoming a member of the Northeast Province."

Sister Kathleen has ministered as both an elementary teacher and administrator in Connecticut, Delaware and New York State. She currently serves as a member of the Provincial Council, responsible for oversight of the educational ministries of the Province, and to the ongoing connections with other members of the Vincentian Family.

Sister Kathleen shares that she "thoroughly enjoys people and almost anything that keeps me in direct contact with them." She also loves the outdoors - in every season of the Northeast - and consequently enjoys any form of walking that puts her in touch with the beauties of nature.
