Meet Sister Margaret Palmer "In my junior year of high school in East Haven, Connecticut, I attended a Vocation Fair where about 75 communities were represented. I gathered up literature from many, and who knows why I sent back a post card to Sister Oliva, requesting information about the Daughters of Charity? I corresponded with her and after graduation, decided that I would take a chance and enter this community that I knew little about, except that they wore these big white wings and had taken a personal interest in me." Sister Margaret began studies in nursing at St. Joseph’s College, Emmitsburg, MD and graduated from Boston College. She has worked as a nurse in Daughters’ hospitals in Bridgeport, CT; Rochester and Binghamton, NY and at Carney Hospital, Boston. She has been a visiting nurse at Laboure’ Center, South Boston and subsequently became the Director of Home Care. She went on for graduate studies and received a Master’s degree in Community Health from Boston College. Sister Margaret spent three months in Thailand with other Daughters of Charity from the Northeast Province, working with Cambodian refugees in a camp on the Thai border which she describes "as a life-altering experience." Margaret is presently the Nursing Director at an outpatient clinic sponsored by Catholic Charities in New Jersey. She has been there for 16 years and loves her ministry at this clinic which provides health care for many people who otherwise would not be able to access the system. She is an avid reader, a history buff, and is one of those individuals who knows something about most everything! She also loves spending time in the garden as well. In reflecting on her life as a Daughter of Charity, she says, "I was insecure, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and it was the Community who gave me the opportunity, the support, and the encouragement to become what I am today. It has been a great blessing."
