Meet Sister Pat Bouza
As the Director of Ghebre Michael Inn in Philadelphia , Sister Pat Bouza has the unique opportunity to live the Gospel message by helping those who are often unable to help themselves at The Ghebre Michael Inn. The Inn provides transitional housing for single homeless men who are either unemployed or under-employed. Services include room and board, financial planning and advice, personal counseling and group counseling.
"The main reason most homeless are unemployed is usually the result of drugs and alcohol," says Sister Pat. "So obviously one of the requirements for our clients is sobriety," she adds. "Confronting the lure of drugs and alcohol is the biggest challenge for an addictive personality; helping them confront that is my greatest challenge."
The 12 month program establishes a goal of full-time employment for the residents so that they are able to support themselves, rent an apartment and reverse bad credit history through financial planning and a re-payment plan.
"My greatest joy in life is working with the truly poor," says Sister Pat. "As a follower of Saint Vincent, I live out my commitment to God in my community by helping the poor to move out of their poverty," she said.
After 36 years of living and ministering with the Daughters of Charity, Sister Pat says that her life has been so "incredibly happy" that she would encourage any young person to try out the lifestyle and then they will know too whether they will find true happiness.
